VTF Announces Cast for 50 Years and Counting: A Musical Revue!

The Virginia Theatre Festival has announced casting for the 50th Anniversary season-opening production 50 Years and Counting: A Musical Revue. Set to run June 27-30 in Culbreth Theatre, 50 Years and Counting: A Musical Revue will be directed by the Theatre’s longtime former Artistic Director Robert Chapel. The production features a cast of 10 VTF alumni performing some of musical theater’s most beloved and show-stopping songs from musicals VTF has produced over the last half-century, including Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, Carousel, Ragtime, Spamalot, and more. Founded in 1974, VTF is the Commonwealth’s longest-running professional summer theatre company and was formerly known as the Heritage Repertory Company, Heritage Repertory Theatre, and Heritage Theatre Festival before renaming as the Virginia Theatre Festival in 2022.

JoVia Armstrong is Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Virginia College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. In 2015, she won the Best Black Female Percussionist of the Year through the Black Women in Jazz Awards and received the 3Arts Siragusa Foundation Artist Award in 2011 for her work as an educator. JoVia sits on the executive board of Chicago's AACM as Secretary.

The Fralin Museum of Art Awarded $125,000 from the Terra Foundation for American Art

The Fralin Museum of Art has been awarded $125,000 from the Terra Foundation for American Art to support “O’Powa O’Meng: The Art and Legacy of Jody Folwell.” The grant marks the first award for The Fralin and the University of Virginia (UVA) from the Terra Foundation for American Art and will fund the traveling exhibition and scholarly exhibition catalog. The Fralin partnered with the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) to organize “O’Powa O’Meng.” The exhibition will be on view at Mia from September 2024 to January 2025, and at The Fralin Museum of Art from February to June 2025. Two additional venues are anticipated.
